Sociology At Work will host an online, freely available publication on themes relevant to applied sociologists via a bi-annual professional newsletter. The papers we aim to publish will include short research reports, personal reflections on career experiences, and discussions of the diverse activities of sociologists who work outside academia. This publication will capture the research, activities and career practises of sociologists that are not usually represented in mainstream academic journals. As well as providing context and reference for other applied sociologists, the publication will also make the heterogeneous experiences of applied sociologists known to the wider public.
Rather than working with a ‘gate-keeping’ mentality of some academic journals, our proposed publication will focus on mentorship in order to support the inclusion of a broader range of authors, particularly the work of early career researchers and other applied sociologists who are less experienced in producing scholarly articles. Focus is also on swift turnaround of editorial and reviewing processes and on constructive critique.
The first issue is scheduled to be published in May 2010.
