Famous Applied Sociologists

Black and white photo of Dr Martin Luther King Jr on 28 August, 1963, at the Mall in Washington, USA during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Dr King is a Black man with a moustache and buzz cut black hair. He wears a dark suit, with a pin and handkerchief over his left lapel. He has his right arm up high, waving to a large crowd of 260,000 people

Did you know that Dr Martin Luther King Jr had a degree in sociology? The American Sociological Association lists these public figures as having degrees in sociology:

  • Rev. Jesse Jackson
  • Emily Balch, 1946 Nobel Peace Prize winner (a social worker and social reformer)
  • Dan Aykroyd, actor/ Blues Brother
  • Robin Williams, actor/ comedian

Then again… Ronald Reagan also had a double major in sociology and economics.

Sociology is often thought of as a ‘leftist’ and progressive science, but it can be applied in many different ways.

Do you know any famous applied sociologists in your country?
