Translating Sociological Theory Into Practice

Applied sociology is the translation of sociological theory into practice for specific clients.

Applied sociologists use sociological knowledge to answer research questions or problems as defined by community groups, government, businesses and other interest groups.

Some applied sociologists may not explicitly use sociological theories or methods in their work. They may instead use their sociological training more broadly to inform their work and their thinking.

This might include:

  • Managing diversity issues at a local council;
  • Organising training for health and safety professionals; in providing ethics coaching for the corporate sector;
  • Working with youth or vulnerable groups;
  • Creating social media infographics.
