Senegal-born sociologist Moustapha Diou began his career as a researcher for UNESCO. He then took an academic position in the USA, where he worked for 24 years, but he returned to Senegal as an applied sociologist.
Diou was appointed an advisor to the Prime Minister, and he will act as president of the Millennium Challenge Account. He heads a half-billion-dollar economic development project. His focus is on improving social infrastructure, from transportation, education, health care and bolstering equality in the agricultural sector. Diou says:
“One of the major problems we have with regard to poverty is its feminisation.”
